Hearing about proposed Niskayuna Square plaza at the corner of Consaul Road and Balltown Road
July 19, 1994 (Tuesday) at 7:30pm in the Niskayuna Community Center on Union Street
The July 16th article states that the town has accepted the developer's statement that a modern supermarket could not fit at either Mohawk Mall or Marshall's Plaza. It also mentions that a past supermarket was a failure at the mall. (In reality, Pantry Pride and later Price Chopper had grocery stores at Mohawk Mall for nearly 17 years. Price Chopper created a new Supercenter format just down the road on Central Avenue in Colonie. To make what was then a much larger format, they consolidated the Mohawk Mall and Crosstown Plaza stores to this new Colonie supercenter format. It was not a failure but rather an issue of resources for a then new and larger store concept. Staff and resources from the closed stores were brought to the new Supercenter.)
The July 20th article mentions that the developer looked into purchasing land from the Montgomery Ward section of Mohawk Mall to locate the supermarket at that end near State Street but this was not pursued further.
