Bradlees purchases lease of former J M Fields store at public auction
late August, 1979
Notes:
  • At the time of the article, Bradlees was currently redesigning the space
  • At that point, Bradlees hoped to be open by the Christmas season of 1979
  • Bradlees belonged to Stop and Shop when the article was published.
  • The article indicates that this portion of the building is owned by Food Fair, the parent company of JM Fields. That would include the store fronts from the grocery store side (facing Balltown Road) to the back of JM Fields / later Bradlees (facing Taurus Road). This did not include the hallways or fountain areas.
  • The space Bradlees would be taking is apparently 95,000 square feet. (Articles in prior years indicated JM Fields occupied around 131,000 square feet.)
  • At this point in history, the center of Mohawk Mall (hallways and store fronts not owned by Food Fair or Montgomery Wards) was owned by Balcor Realty Investors Ltd. of Illinois
  • In August 1979, Mohawk Mall was estimated to employ approximately 2,800 people and had 88 stores.
  • At the time, Mohawk Mall had the largest number of stores for any retail complex between New York City and Montreal, according to mall management.
  • Herbert Grimshaw was the mall manager at the time, starting in 1972.
